Ranil Jayasundera is an expert nuclear safety and licensing consultant with more than 23 years of experience spanning regulatory oversight, advanced reactor licensing, and operational nuclear safety. His career includes serving as Senior Regulatory Program Officer at the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), Manager of Licensing & Station Operations at Kinectrics, Canada Advanced Reactor Licensing Manager at Westinghouse, and Director of Licensing & Operations at the Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC). Collectively, these roles give him a comprehensive understanding of Canada’s nuclear landscape.
As Founder and Principal Consultant of Cyrus Nuclear Solutions, Ranil provides expert advisory support to utilities, advanced reactor vendors, and executive teams. His work focuses on licensing strategy, regulatory engagement, and safety case development, drawing on decades of experience leading complex regulatory interactions, developing licensing pathways, and managing high-value technical portfolios.
Ranil has contributed to a range of notable nuclear safety and licensing initiatives, including microreactor regulatory and deployment planning at SRC; advancing Canadian licensing pathways and leading CNSC Vendor Design Review (VDR) activities for the eVinci microreactor at Westinghouse; and managing major operational nuclear safety projects at Kinectrics. His project work includes leading Periodic Safety Reviews, Safety Report updates, Severe Accident Management Guideline development, Environmental Qualification assessments, safety case development, and supporting multiple design vendors with the VDR process. He also built a strong regulatory foundation at the CNSC, overseeing Power Reactor Operating Licence holders, conducting inspections and audits, and developing compliance programs across multiple Safety and Control Areas.
Ranil holds a Master of Engineering in Nuclear Engineering from McMaster University and a Bachelor of Applied Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Waterloo. He contributes to international nuclear initiatives as a member of the IAEA Technical Working Group on Regulatory Oversight of Long Lead Items for Small Modular Reactors and Microreactors.
